Women That Rock Presents
Starbenders, Scarlet Sails, Astra The 22s, Natalie Claro
Hailing from Atlanta, GA, Starbenders are the half way home for misunderstood misfits, fringers and glam punks. Front-woman, Kimi Shelter and her gang have conc...octed a perfect alchemic blend of androgynous rock and roll power with "stuck in your brain" pop melodies. Imagine David Bowie playing 7 minutes in heaven with Debbie Harry.
Shelter began working with producer, Nico Constantine (Lady Gaga , Program The Dead, Institution Records) in 2014 who encouraged her to start a band. Aaron Lecesne was the first call Shelter made. The duo were best of friends and had intense music crushes on each other. The genesis of Starbenders took form. Guitarist, Kriss Tokaji, entered the scene in early 2015 after the band witnessed him laying waste to a guitar at a shitty house party in the middle of no where. "We couldn't believe our ears and eyes! Our prayers had been answered!", beams Shelter. The dream line up crystallized in 2017 with the entrance of drummer, Emily Moon. "It was the final piece to the puzzle. The band was in the middle of a transition and I thought to check craigslist of all places when I came across Emily's ad." shared Lecesne. After responding to the band's cryptic email, Moon met up with them that same night. It was love at first site.
Scarlet Sails is a New York City based band formed by songwriter/pianist, Olya Viglione, and her husband and drummer, Brian Viglione (The Dresden Dolls, Violent Femmes) in 2014. The two began collaborating on music and soon enlisted guitarist Nick Emde (White Widows Pact) on guitar and New York session bassist, Jesse Krakow, to begin performing live and recording the band’s debut EP. Producer/engineer, Martin Bisi (SWANS, Sonic Youth) recorded the 5 song offering at his own BC Studios in Brooklyn, and it was released on January 15th, 2016.
The band’s sound draws from the evocative British rock such as Queen, David Bowie, and T Rex, with Olya’s classical upbringing, and love of American funk and soul music. Scarlet Sails are planning a full-length release for 2017.
Kerry Kaleja and Eric Jayk first met in 2011 while Kaleja was living in New York City. Originally from Riga, Latvia, Kaleja was looking for guitar lessons and stumbled onto Jayk's posting on Craigslist. At this time, Jayk was actively touring with Wildstreet. Three years later, the duo decided to form Astra The 22's.
Fusing their eclectic influences ranging from The Kills to Michael Jackson to Nine Inch Nails to Blondie, Astra the 22's released their debut EP ‘’Blue Venom” in Sept 2014 and began performing in Europe. They appeared at festivals including: Vilnius Music Week in Lithuania, the Gaizin Kalns Festival, and the KLANG! Rock Festival. In 2015, they performed at the Gold Microphone Awards show the biggest music awards show in Latvia. The duo have done over a dozen interviews, and performed Latvian National TV/Radio. Their songs are in regular rotation on radio stations in Latvia & Lithuania.
In 2016, the band relocated to Williamsburg, Brooklyn and recruited bassist Rebecca Silber-Capalbo, drummer Luca Bertaglia, and guitarist Michiko Egger. In 2017 Astra The 22's released their second EP Paris Love, which has received many great reviews from music press in and around NYC.
Astra the 22’s are currently planning festival and tour dates for 2018 and the release of a new music video.
